Lesvos or Lesbos is the third largest island of Greece and the eighth largest in the Mediterranean. According to the census of 2011, the island had a total of 86,436 inhabitants, of whom 37,890 lived In Mytilini, the administrative and economic centre of the island,.
Lesvos is located in the north Aegean, near the Turkish coast.. In the north, the Gulf of Edremit separates the island from Asia Minor with a distance of between nine kilometres in the north and fifteen kilometres in the east.. The nearest larger islands are Chios 48 km to the south, Psara 65 km southwest, Agios Efstratios 76 km west and Limnos 74 km northwest.

Geography
Lesvos is a mountainous island of volcanic origin and reaching nearly one thousand meters above sea level. Mountain ranges dominate the island, the Lepetymnos in the north is 968 m at its highest peak, Vigla, the highest on the island, almost equalled by the Olymbos in the south with 967 m. Profitis Ilias reaches a height of 799 m in the western Ordymnos range, while in the southeast Kourteri at 527 m is the highest elevation on the Amali peninsula.
Its maximum length measured from Cape Agrilia in the south-east to the extreme southwest is more than 70 km.
The 1636km⊃2; island is divided by two gulfs reaching from the south deep into the island interior. The 43 km⊃2; and approximately 12 km long Gulf of Gera in the southeast is connected to the sea by a 200 to 800 m wide channel. The Gulf of Kalloni with a surface area of 110 km⊃2; goes up to 21 km into the island interior. The rest of the coast line is divided by numerous small bays. In various places, uninhabited islets lie off the coast.

Nearly half of the island is hilly country with olive and fruit trees, and forests, predominantly Mediterranean Pines with oaks and walnut trees cover about 20% of the island area. The mountain and hill country is interrupted again and again by plains that make up almost one third of the island. The largest are around the two lake-like gulfs. Lesbos has more than a dozen rivers and streams flowing all year round, the largest of which, the Evergetoulas, originates on Olymbos in the east of the island, and flows into the Gulf of Gera.

Climate
The climate of the island is characterized by a strongly variable locally and seasonally distributed rainfall and large differences between the minimum and maximum of the daytime temperatures. Lesvos lies between the Mediterranean winter climate and that of the continental plains of Asia Minor..
